Currently a small storm front is passing over England. Its effects have been felt here as the Shed roof is now looking decidedly sorry for its self.
The wind is not likely to do much more in the way of damage but the rain that is expected to fall over the next 2 days might prove more damaging than the wind ever could be…
It’s long past time I replaced the roof felt but now that its somewhat urgent I have a dilemma. Change the whole roof for something else or just re-felt it?
I suspect my options are roofing felt or corrugated plastics, unless someone has another ideas. Anyone got any experience with this sort of thing? Definitely not my forte…
My experience on this is very limited and I’m not particularly practical, but it probably depends on how much you want to spend! You can buy waterproof gap filler that will go on even in wet conditions, but that depends on whether your roof will hold the weight of someone and whether that will be good enough to at least get you weatherproof again. We had our house main roof replaced about six years ago and the roofer that did that said that fibreglass roof coverings were becoming more common on things like flat offshoots and garages etc. But they’re expensive! If possible, I think I’d re-cover the damaged bits in felt and then cover the whole lot in another layer of felt, with a layer of pitch to stick it all down (I’ve seen builders do it that way when it’s too difficult to remove the old roof material if it’s still basically sound).
Anyway, enough of that! I hope all your troops got rescued without suffering any damage!

Thanks for the info. Look out for an update on the shed. All inside was saved in the end if a little damp…

The pitch on your roof looks plenty steep for 3-tab(asphat shingles). Although with the total size not being overly large. I think a replacing the roofing with metal sheeting would last the lifetime of the shed. Metal sheet roofing is way more expensive – but you will never need to replace it. And – installed properly you will (should never) have to deal with leaks.
Although the rain will be louder on the metal roof. I would suggest adding 1-2 inches of foam insolation (ridged pink / purple foam isn’t just for gaming hills!). The insulation will help dampen the roofing noise as well as provide insulation to keep it warmer in winter and cooler in the summer.
Best of luck!
